Relationship between intraocular pressure and preservation of visual field in glaucoma.
نویسنده
چکیده
Intraocular pressure (IOP) correlates with progressive loss of visual field in patients with glaucoma. Decreasing IOP has been proven to reduce progressive loss of the visual field. This is true both for glaucoma patients with IOPs above or within the normal range. For individuals with ocular hypertension (high IOP but no evidence of glaucomatous neuropathy), lowering IOP may reduce the risk of developing glaucoma. This article reviews scientific evidence that supports the importance of lowering IOP in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

What is the Real Cause of Glaucoma?
Introduction: The term glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that have a characteristic optic neuropathy with associated visual field loss in common. Intraocular pressure has been considered to be the only causal factor for glaucoma and the only factor that can be manipulated to alter the course of the disease. But considering high intraocular pressure as the only factor responsible for glauco...
متن کاملAssociation between intraocular pressure and loss of visual field in chronic simple glaucoma.
This paper reports the analyses on data from 747 patients with chronic simple glaucoma (CSG) recorded in the King's College Hospital glaucoma data base between January 1970 and February 1985, having a mean follow-up time of 5.1 years (mode 8 years) with the object of determining the relationship of intraocular pressure (IOP) and visual field loss in CSG. A highly significant negative relationsh...
متن کاملCourse of exfoliation and simplex glaucoma after primary trabeculectomy.
AIM To study the course of exfoliation and simplex glaucoma with respect to intraocular pressure (IOP) regulation and visual field survival after primary trabeculectomy. METHODS Postoperative IOP regulation and complications were analysed prospectively in 95 patients. Mean follow up was 46 months. Visual field survival was studied by high pass resolution perimetry (HRP) in a subsample of 28 p...

PURPOSE To analyze the relationship between intraocular pressure (IOP) and the progression of visual field defects in Japanese primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS The subjects of the study were patients undergoing treatment for POAG or NTG who had performed visual field tests at least ten times with a Humphrey field analyzer (Swe...
متن کاملIntraocular Pressure Measurements by Three Different Tonometers in Children with Aphakic Glaucoma and a Thick Cornea
Background: To evaluate the agreement in intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements by Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) and Tono-Pen XL (TXL) with the Goldmann Applanation Tonometer (GAT) and to examine corneal biomechanical properties in aphakic glaucoma patients with a central corneal thickness (CCT) >600 µ. Methods: Thirty-six eyes of aphakic glaucoma patients (group 1) and 40 eyes of normal chil...
